From Generative to Agentic Artificial Intelligence in Foreign Language Teaching, Learning, and Assessment
Abstract
Artificial intelligence is transforming foreign language education, reshaping how languages are taught, learned, and assessed. From Generative to Agentic Artificial Intelligence in Foreign Language Teaching, Learning, and Assessment explores this transformation from generative AI and large language models to multimodal technologies and emerging agentic AI systems. Drawing on current research, the book examines AI-supported teaching, personalized learning, learner autonomy, automated feedback and assessment, and the evolving roles of teachers and learners. It also addresses challenges related to validity, fairness, academic integrity, privacy, algorithmic bias, and equitable access. Advocating a human-centered approach, the volume introduces the PAGE framework - Pedagogy-first, Agency-preserving, Governance-bound, and Equity-oriented - and offers researchers, educators, and practitioners a forward-looking perspective on responsible AI integration and the future of foreign language education.
